It's not a treatment in itself, but a technology used alongside many of the treatments described on this site — from crowns and veneers to orthodontic aligners and implant restorations. A digital scan can be used at different stages of dental treatment, depending on what you're having done: restorative work such as crowns, bridges, veneers, and implant restorations is often designed from a digital scan rather than a physical impression, and orthodontic appliances such as clear aligners are typically planned and manufactured this way too. Whether a digital scan is used for your treatment depends on the specific procedure and the equipment available at the treating clinic.
Many patients find a digital scan more comfortable than traditional impression trays, since there's nothing to bite down on or hold in place while it sets. It's also quick, and the resulting 3D model can usually be viewed immediately, which can make it easier to talk through what's being planned. That said, a physical impression is sometimes still used or preferred depending on the treatment — your dentist will use whichever method is appropriate for your case.
