Many patients combine a hygiene appointment with other dental treatment during their visit to Türkiye, rather than travelling for cleaning alone.

A hygiene appointment helps remove the buildup that contributes to gum inflammation, bad breath, and, over time, more serious gum disease. It can also help address some surface staining, though it isn't the same as cosmetic whitening and won't change the underlying colour of the tooth itself.
How much difference a single visit makes depends on how much buildup is present and the health of your gums to begin with. For established gum disease, hygiene treatment is usually one part of an ongoing plan rather than a single fix.
Routine cleaning is suitable for most people, but the right approach depends on what the dentist or hygienist finds. If there are signs of more advanced gum disease, a deep clean may be recommended instead of a standard scale and polish, and this is sometimes carried out over more than one appointment.
It's a good idea to let the treating dentist know about your general health and any medications you're taking, since this occasionally affects how a procedure is planned. The dentist will factor in your general health alongside your dental examination.
A scale and polish is usually carried out using hand instruments, an ultrasonic scaler, or a combination of both, followed by polishing with a fine paste. It's generally well tolerated without anaesthetic, though some people find their gums a little tender, particularly if it's been a while since their last clean.
A deep clean reaches further below the gumline and can take longer, sometimes requiring local anaesthetic and more than one appointment, depending on how much of the mouth needs treating. It's common to feel a little apprehensive about dental appointments generally — if this applies to you, mentioning it to the dentist or hygienist beforehand means they can talk you through each step and go at a pace that's comfortable for you.
After a standard scale and polish, most people notice little more than slightly sensitive gums for a short time, and can go straight back to normal activities. After a deep clean, some tenderness, sensitivity to hot or cold, or minor gum bleeding for a day or two is common, and usually settles on its own.
