Gum contouring is a dental procedure that involves reshaping your gumline. Why would you want to reshape your gumline? If you feel that your gumline is uneven or sits too high or too low, then gum contouring is a procedure that can drastically improve the appearance of your gums. Some people do feel self-conscious about their gumline, especially when they smile or laugh. Many patients feel that their smile is too “gummy” and thankfully gum contouring, which is also known as a gingivoplasty, we can help them to achieve their perfect smile. Gum contouring can help you achieve a wider, healthier-looking smile.

The main benefits of gum contouring are:

  • Achieving a more even, symmetrical smile
  • Helps prevent tooth decay
  • Permanent results

How is it done?

Gum contouring is carried out in one visit to our dental practice. First, local anaesthesia is administered to numb the area. The dentist will use a specialised laser or scalpel to remove and reshape the gumline. This will reveal more of the tooth and will help achieve a wider more symmetrical gumline. In some cases, a scalpel may be used to remove the gum.

Does it hurt?

As you will be given local anaesthesia prior to the procedure, you will not feel pain during the process. After the gum contouring has been completed, some sensitivity and tenderness can be expected. In preparation for this, our dental practitioner will provide you with an appropriate painkiller to help deal with this.

Recovery

After you have had the procedure, you may have to eat soft foods for a few days due to the tenderness of your gums. You will be provided with instructions to facilitate a speedy recovery by your dentist.

How much does it cost?

The fee for gum contouring will depend on the method used and the amount removed. Typically, the fee for the removal is between £XXX - £XXX.
